With Summer Right Around the Corner, the Heat is Rising…

Some drivers might have noticed an increase in police presence during the late evening, early morning hours over the last month or so. This increase can be attributed to the most recent Heat is On DUI enforcement campaign, which ends on Friday, May 10. Referred to by the Colorado Department of Transportation as “Spring Enforcement Event”, this DUI enforcement campaign has contributed to upward of 800 DUI arrests in a one month period of time. Although some may expect a decrease in DUI enforcement as this enforcement event comes to an end, Colorado DUI defense attorneys want you to BEWARE! It’s only the beginning.

As summer approaches, the Colorado Department of Transportation is beginning to announce increased DUI enforcement plans from several law enforcement agencies. Drivers can expect increased enforcement throughout the Denver Metro Area during the summer months, but especially over Memorial Day weekend and the July 4th holiday. Last year, increased Memorial Day DUI enforcement contributed to nearly 550 DUI arrests throughout the state, and increased July 4th holiday enforcement contributed to just over 600 arrests. Denver Police Department alone reported 65 DUI arrests on Memorial Day and 85 on July 4th. Needless to say, the increased DUI enforcement is effective and is a factor to be considered when making plans.

There is only one way to ensure that you will not be stopped for DUI—don’t drink and drive. One of the best ways to protect yourself from a DUI is to have a plan before you leave the house regarding how you will get home safely. If you plan to drink, even one drink, this plan should NOT involve you driving. A taxi ride, a hotel room, or a designated driver is almost guaranteed to be several times less expensive than a DUI. On average, a DUI can cost at least $10,000 after possible bond fees, defense attorney’s fees, court fines and costs, and other costs associated with defending against a DUI charge.

If you find yourself in a situation where you are being accused of DUI, do not hesitate to call an experienced Denver DUI attorney.
