Colorado DUI Attorney’s Tips on Avoiding DUI

Getting arrested for driving under the influence can be kind of a nightmare. Fortunately, there are a number of things that you can do to avoid getting a DUI. However, even when you are doing everything right, mistakes may be made and accidents may happen. If you are charged with a DUI, the most important thing that you can do is work with a Colorado DUI attorney. Here are a few things you can do to avoid a DUI.

Do Not Drink and Drive

Of course, the easiest way to avoid a DUI is to not drink and drive in the first place. If you are out with your friends and you are drinking, either have a designated driver or call a cab to pick you up. The best and easiest thing to do after you have had anything to drink is to call someone to pick you up.

Know What the Legal Limit Is

Many people get DUI’s simply because they are unaware what the legal limit is. The other half of this equation is knowing how much you can drink before you are probably going to be over the limit. Remember that it is not illegal to drink and drive, but it is illegal to drive while your blood alcohol content is over a certain limit. Your Colorado DUI attorney may be able to help you find this information.

Have Your Documents Ready

If you are pulled over for drunk driving, a police officer is going to be looking for anything that might point to the evidence of DUI. If you are fumbling for your license, insurance, and registration documents after being pulled over, an officer may take this as a sign that you are drunk rather than just assuming you are nervous about being pulled over to begin with.

Be Polite and Cooperative With Police

If you are acting belligerent, rude, and uncooperative to the police officer who pulled you over, they may see this as evidence that you are drunk. Make sure that you are always as polite and cooperative with the police as you possibly can be without admitting guilt. After your arrest, you can never underestimate the importance of hiring a Colorado DUI attorney to work with you.
