Douglas Barnes has over 30 years of experience as a criminal defense attorney and former Colorado public defender. He uses his skills defending motorists charged with DUI in Colorado as an associate attorney with Tiftickjian Law Firm.
For 28 years, Mr. Barnes managed a full appellate caseload through the Colorado Court of Appeals, the Colorado Supreme Court and postconviction proceedings, including an extraordinary number of cases involving homicides, life sentences, and complex records. He is the attorney of record in more than 500 felony appeals, including more than 100 published cases, which very well may be the most by any active defense attorney in the State.
Mr. Barnes supervised and trained dozens of appellate attorneys over the years, including two currently serving on the Colorado Court of Appeals. He acted as strategic legal advisor and appellate liaison for numerous trial offices, including Adams, Denver, El Paso and Weld Counties. Mr. Barnes has presented many legal education seminars on topics including yearly state and federal case summaries, motions practice, rules of evidence, habitual offender litigation, and appellate oral arguments. He received a special recognition award by the Public Defender in 1985 and was nominated for both the David F. Vela Award in 2008 and the Terri Brake Award in 2010.
Douglas Barnes is a graduate of the National Institute for Trial Advocacy (1981) and earned his Juris Doctorate from the University of Colorado School of Law, Boulder, Colorado (1980). He has a Bachelor of Arts, Magna Cum Laude, from the University of Northern Colorado (1977).
